Frequently asked questions.
Congratulations! You have found your dream dress. And you desire to look your very best on this most important day of your life. If you are like the majority of brides, your gown doesn’t fit quite the way you had hoped it would. It can be discouraging. We are here to help. Our goal is to make your gown fit your body and your vision perfectly. It should fit like a glove. There is a process to making this happen.
Schedule your initial appointment. We are BY APPOINTMENT ONLY and we are exclusively bridal wear! In order to provide the personalized service you need. Each bride and every dress is unique and special. Time is taken to ensure this from the very beginning. You can contact us through our Contact page. We will get in touch with you once we have your information and schedule your initial consultation.
When should I schedule my first appointment?
You should schedule your first appointment as early as possible. Our schedules fill up very quickly, especially during heavy wedding seasons. The sooner you can schedule the better availability we will be able to give you. We like to have at least 2 or 3 months from start to finish. Vintage redesigns take even longer. As well as any customizations. However, sometimes life happens and you do not have much time. We do accommodate “last minute” situations on a case by case basis, depending on our availability. Anything less than a month does incur a rush fee.
How long does it take to get my dress finished?
Every dress is unique and every custom fit is unique. With that said, we evaluate your needs on the first appointment. Some gowns need minor adjustments. Some gowns require extensive alterations. Most gowns fall somewhere in between. On your initial appointment we go over all concerns and needs with you in your gown. We come up with a game plan so to speak. At that time we are able to determine how much time and how many appointments will be required.
Typically there are 3 appointments. In some instances, if there is more complexity involved, that number is larger. On some rarer occasions only 2 appointments are needed. These can be spread out over 2 to 3 months, or over a couple of weeks. It really depends on your needs and our schedule.
What should I expect at my appointments?
Your first appointment is the initial consultation where we discuss what fit issues you may have and how to proceed forward. We look at the gown on your body and talk about all of the elements that need attention. We map out the process from here. Usually at this appointment we do some if not all of the pinning from the hips and thighs upward. This includes any bust adjustments, straps, sleeves, hips and thighs and backside.
At this time we schedule the rest of your appointments. At your second appointment we check what adjustments we have made and talk about any tweaks if needed. Then if nothing else is needed there we pin the hem. The bustle can be pinned at this appointment as well. Sometimes we need to see you again to check any readjustments before we move onto the hemming and bustling.
At your third (and most times your final) appointment the dress is finished or nearly finished. If the hemming and bustling were able to be pinned at the second appointment, then this is the final try on and pick up appointment. If so, this is a very special appointment! This is the last time you will put your gown on before your wedding day. It should be all you want it to be. This is the time you will bring your veil and your jewelry with you to put everything together. This is important to make certain that there are no surprises the day of. Please feel free to bring your mothers, grandmothers, bridesmaids, etc. on this day. No pets please! We take pictures of the final product and celebrate YOU.
I love to showcase my brides on the home page of this website and on my instagram. I always ask and I ALWAYS wait until your wedding day has passed and you have beautiful pictures to send me. If you do not wish to be part of this just let me know. I would never share what you are not comfortable sharing.
How much do Alterations cost?
This is a question that can only be answered at the end of the process. On your initial appointment we go over estimated costs and estimated work. However, this is not a guarantee of time and complexity of the work to be done. Sometimes when we get inside a dress and start our work we get surprised by construction elements we had not anticipated. Sometimes the amount of work we think something will take changes once we have your dress in our workshop. We try to give as close to a price estimate as possible. However, average prices can range from around $450 and up. If your gown has lace and beading and is very ill fitting then it will take a lot more time and effort to make it right. If it fits fairly well and only needs some nips and tucks then the price will be smaller. Payment is due at the final pickup. Deposits are paid at the initial appointment if needed.
What should I bring to my appointments?
Your wedding gown of course! You will also need to have any and all undergarments you plan on wearing your day of. You should always present yourself in your gown the exact way you plan on wearing it on your wedding day. This is very important! Undergarments can make an enormous difference in fit. It would be unfortunate to go through alterations where your dress fits precisely and then on the wedding day put on a pair of spanx or a strapless bra and suddenly the dress doesn’t fit! We make suggestions along the way if something comes up. We can put bra inserts and push up pads in your gown. Also, you will need your wedding shoes. On the day we pin your hem and bustle you will need the exact shoes you intend on wearing. We suggest you bring both ceremony shoes and reception shoes. We will check everything. Your day should go smoothly. We want you to be comfortable and for your dress to shine.
Do you make veils?
Yes! We can custom make a veil for your gown according to your specifications (when possible). We can make a veil using heirloom pieces from your family. Example - your grandmothers or mothers headpiece, mothers veil redesigned, custom lengths and lace details added.
What is a vintage gown redesign?
Dress Doctor can take an heirloom gown and recreate it into a modern design for the modern bride. If you have a wedding gown that your mother or
grandmother (or anyone really) and you like the idea of being able to wear their gown for your wedding then you are in the right place! This is a specialty we offer. We can restore the beauty of a faded, aged, out of style gown. We work closely with you and custom design a new gown from ideas we share in the process. It is a special thing to pass a dress onto the next generation. And it is amazing to see the transformation from what was to the beautiful new gown. It ensures a legacy. And the finished product is an original one of kind, custom fitted masterpiece.
