Meet the Dress Doctor

When I was a little girl I would watch my mother sew. I would rummage through her fabric and pattern stash and imagine the possibilities. I taught myself to sew at 10 years old by creating a shirt from my mother’s stash. I continued learning and exploring and ended up making a lot of my own clothes in college, and for my children as a young mother. I would go to thrift stores and find gowns and redesign them into little girl dress up dresses for my daughters. I began making wedding gowns in my early 20s. My first wedding gown was for a friend who had a vision of a beautiful dress but no budget to make it happen. So I made it happen! I continued to design and create unique wedding gowns. I moved to Alabama in 2010 and found myself working for a friend at her alterations shop specializing in formalwear. I began to work in pageant and prom and wedding gown alterations. It was during a dress fitting with a 6 year old pageant contestant that Dress Doctor was born. She told her mother that I was going to operate on her just like a doctor.

I have recently reopened a new storefront and workshop after Covid shut my doors. I have a passion for all things wedding, especially for wedding gowns. I love helping women and their families create the vision of beauty that they dream of. I feel honored to have helped so many women. And I am very excited to meet and help so many more.

I am a mother (did I mention I have 6 children!), grandmother, and a newlywed myself. I love to sing, eat yummy ice cream, laugh out loud, give warm hugs, and I have never met a stranger.

Meet Kathlene

I’ve been involved in sewing in some form since I was 6 years old when my first grade teacher started bringing embroidery projects to school for me to do . And when I was 12 , my mother started teaching me the art of sewing and making clothes . Neither she nor I ever dreamed that I would end up making a career of it but here I am now having been doing wedding dress alterations full time for 11 years now and enjoying it more than ever .I’ve always had a fascination for wedding dresses since the first time I ever saw them for sale in the JC Penney catalog as a little girl and my fascination for them continues to grow more every day . I’ve worked with several dress shops across Alabama handling alterations for them and I have many, many happy brides that I’ve worked with through the alterations process and even been with them steaming their dress and veil on the wedding day and helping them into the dress for their happy walk down the aisle .
